About

I’m Joseph Walker, a 20 year-old Communication and Media student (second-year) at Bournemouth University. When not studying, however, you will find me at home in South London.

I intend mainly to discuss my interest in hip-hop music.

From the moment my mother purchased Eminem’s “Marshall Mathers LP” for me as a gift in primary school, I have been a keen follower of the hip-hop music genre and music that draws from similar cultures and origins. It would be far easier to refer to such music as ‘urban’ but I feel that such an umbrella term is too much of a cliché.

As I grew older and more familiar with the internet, I was able to not have to rely on commercial radio stations and music video channels as a source for new music, which introduced me deeper into the rap and hip-hop genres towards critically-acclaimed albums and artists that would have otherwise passed me by. Whilst I do not expect everyone to enjoy this type of music as I do, I do at least try to direct more attention to certain people and songs I enjoy in an attempt to fight against the never-ending battle against the stigma the genre faces (particularly when the arguments against the genre are based on songs heard on the radio that are anything but a representation of the true artform).

Whilst this will be the main subject I will focus on, there will of course be occasional musings regarding other subjects that interest my world. If HBO’s “The Wire” ever makes a spin-off, for instance, you’ll all be in trouble.
